Growwiners in British Columbia
DON KELLETT
is located in Coquitlam, BC, in a residential area where he has
managed to squeeze about 40 vines onto a steeply terraced, south facing
slope in my backyard. In 1977, after several years of amateur wine
making, he got the urge to grow his own vine - and so purchased this
scraggly little thing labeled "Riesling" at the corner nursery/milk
store. After a property move and much tribulation, the cuttings of that
original Okanagan Riesling have provided my most successful plantings.
While we don't have a harsh winter in Coquitlam, lack of sun, torrential rain, incredible humidity, voracious wasps and the most savage racoons on the continent provide major challenges.
