Northwest Central Ontario
(zone 3a/ 3b) Gordon Ward has been growing grapes since 1976 when he
planted three varieties: Niagara, Fredonia, and Valiant. In 1986
while visiting the Minnesota State Fair he signed up as a member of the Minnesota Grape Growers Association. At this time he was looking for land with a south facing slope and bought an 80 acre bush lot in 1991 near Cloud Bay off Hwy. 61 close to the U.S. border (which is about as far you can go without being becoming a Amercian Citizen).
Gordon has grown at least 30+/- varieties (Table and Wine grapes) in this harsh god forsaken country, knowing that no wild grapes grow in this area.
At the moment he is still experimenting to see what grapes are hardy and early ripening, and with high enough brix for eating or wine making.
