Seminars Year One, Nov 4, 2000
The day was split between winemaking seminars in the morning, an awards luncheon for the Eastern Ontario Amateur Winemakers Association followed by a seminar on award-winning wines, and seminars dealing with growing grapes in non-traditional areas of Ontario and Quebec.
MORNING SEMINARS
ONE: Dan Sullivan presented results of an experiment conducted by the Pickering Wine Guild. They fermented Baco Noir with various yeasts and attendees sampled the results. See Project Noir - Can Yeast Tame the Beast?.
TWO: Larry Paterson poured 4 samples of Landot and Landal Noir and provided an example of hybrid/vinifera blending.Landot Family Information.
THREE: Elia Gallo conducted a seminar on how to make big red wines. See Big Red Winemaking by Elia Gallo
FOUR: Manfred Hecke conducted a beer-making seminar and poured results.
LUNCHEON AND EOAWC AWARDS CEREMONY
Awards for the Eastern Ontario Amateur Winemaking Competition were presented by Amateur Winemakers of Canada President Gordon Barnes in his own inimitable way. He also took the opportunity to update attendees on judging processes at the National Championships, and discussed some issues surrounding Canadian wine. You can see the results from the

AFTERNOON (2:30 to 5:30)
FIVE: EOAWC 2000 Chief Judge Jim Lloyd presented some of the award winning wines from EOAWC. All participants judged these wines using the actual judging format as an educational exercise. Jim discussed a number of judging issues.
SIX: Larry Paterson discussed history and prospects for Central Ontario.A brief history of grapegrowing in Central Ontario
SEVEN: Bert Dunn of Tottenham gave a speech on cold climate growing (ZONE 4B).
EIGHT: Deb Marshall, editor of the Prince Edward County Winegrowers Association newsletter discussed viticulture in The County.
NINE: Anthony Carone of Quebec was asked to make an impromptu presentation of his efforts northeast of Montreal - which he did to the delight of all.
The day was a fun and educational experience for all, and will certainly be repeated in 2001. Our thanks to all presenters and participants who made it such a success!
