THE ANNUAL SEMINARS: 2002

The third annual day of seminars will be held Saturday October 19th 2002 at Sir Sandford Fleming College in Peterborough. The seminars for 2003 will almost certainly be held in late August to provide better timing for most members. This day of seminars will be held in conjunction with The Amateur Winemakers of Ontario (AWO). Everyone in attendance at the seminars will become a member of the AWO for the period of one day. Information will be available about AWO for anyone interested in joining this organization for a longer period!


This year's theme will be "9 months of COVA: the Baby is born!

Registration is accomplished for members of the Central Ontario Viniculture Association, the Prince Edward County Winegrowers Association, l'Association des Viticulteurs de l'Est Ontarien, or of the Amateur Winemakers of Ontario by sending a cheque made out to "COVA" in the amount of $40 to:
Larry Paterson, 1325 Royal Drive, Peterborough, Ontario, K9H 6R6. The seminars are open to any other interested person at the price of $45. The price includes the lunch. Those who wish to partake of the seminars but not the lunch may do so for $20 less than the full amount.
MORNING SEMINARS
8:30 - 9:00 Registration, coffee and muffins, a whole load of unleashed hot air in small groups no doubt...


Dr. Bryan PellINTRODUCTION: 9:00 - 9:15 ... COVA President Dr. Bryan Pell (Peregrine North Farm, Peterborough) will make a short presidential address, welcome attendees and briefly introduce the program for the day.

Alissa and Irwin SmithClick here to visit Ocala Winery website: 9:15 - 10:15 STARTING A WINERY IN CENTRAL ONTARIO... Irwin Smith of Ocala Winery will tell us how he started the first modern winery in Central Ontario.

John Rufa is going to start a new fruit winery just north of BuckhornThis building will become a winery in Buckhorn: 10:15 - 11:15 ... John Rufa is starting a fruit winery just North of Buckhorn. John will tell us about his experiences and goals in starting the only winery near Peterborough. This should make an interesting counterpoint to Irwin's presentation.

moneybags wannabe9 and a half months of COVA: 11:45 - 12:15 ... Treasurer Larry Paterson will make a report on the first year of existence of COVA, highlighting events and projects undertaken, and the financial consequences of these to COVA.

The meal will be matched to a selection of fruit wines from COVA members. Note that COVA has made a commitment to promoting the use of fruit wines with foods normally associated with grape-based wines. AFTERNOON SEMINARS

Danno Sullivan judging, 2002 1:15 - 2:45 ... Winemaking Seminar: Balancing your wine: By winemaker extraodinaire Dan Sullivan, a Prince Edward County grower, highly successful amateur winemaker and wine judge. Danno has also earned a reputation for highly literate postings about winemaking chemistry to the Growwine listserver...

Sarah Tedford, the Phantom Honour Student 3:00 - 3:30 ... Sarah Tedford from Trent University in Peterborough will make a report on her grapevine research in the Peterborough area. More details soon.

Alain Breault and Mariette Lageux3:30 - 4:30 ... GRAPE VARIETIES FOR CENTRAL ONTARIO. Alain Breault of A&M viticulture in Quebec will join us to discuss grape varieties suitable to various portions of the Central Ontario region. Certainly one of the best people available to ask questions. Alain is also the Canadian agent for Northern Winework, the new book about growing grapes in cold climates, which will be available to purchase at the special in-person price of $35 on this day only (Cash, cheque or money order to Alain Breault).

4:30 (weather permitting) Perhaps the day can be finished up with a short tour of Peregrine North vineyard (about a five minute drive from the college) for those who are interested.
