COVA Meeting Minutes April 9 2005

Venue: Kawartha Country Vineyard, Buckhorn, Ontario

COVA Meeting Attendees: Irwin Smith, Bert Dunn,
 Carl Kimmett, Larry Paterson, John Rufa, Rick Wagner,
 Kathyrn Palmer, and Mike Traynor, Trish Dougherty,
 Paul Ward, Alain Breault, Jacques Breault,
 Scott Sargent, Wally Henry, Bryan Pell, Hugh Johnstone, 
Shane Curry, Maureen and Rob Davidson and Liang Liu

Late arrivals : Mike Traynor, Andy Robson, Doug Jive.

Membership dues (and lunch money) were collected by Liang Liu,
 Treasurer

Secretary  Paul Ward recorded proceedings.

President Bryan Pell called the meeting to order at 9:23 Call
 meeting to order then introduced Larry Paterson.

Order of business was:

1/ Alain Breault to talk on vine types for our area.

2/ Larry Paterson to talk on local vineyards.

3/ Lunch.

4/ John and Malcolm Slack to talk on mineral use in vineyards.

5/ Panel discussion.

Larry talked about the history of the area and made an
introduction of all in attendance.

Treasurers report given by Liang Lui. We had 26 members and a
 balance in bank of $ 2,543.20 plus today’s memberships
 received. The trip to Prince Edward County last year
 netted $ 240.

Elmer Swenson’s book was introduced at $ 12 per copy and Northern
 Wineworks book that Alain brought with him was 
also available. 

A discussion on where vineyards are located in the area
 proceeded.

Carl Kimmett introduced us to two other farming organizations
 in the Lindsay area.

Secretaries report and minutes from last years general meeting
 were introduced.

Carl Kimmett motioned to accept both Treasurer’s report and
 Minutes from last years meeting by approved. This was
 seconded by Kathryn Palmer and Rick Wagner and accepted
 by quorum.

Note that meeting notes will be posted on LFW web site.

Bryan Pell called for elections for this year and outlined
 board and executive as of today.

Slate of officers was prepared by a research committee and is
 as follows:

Proposed to accept this list by Bryan Pell and seconded by Hugh 
Johnstone and carried unanimously, except for two abstainers.

Larry takes floor to thank Neil Lamont for hosting recent day of 
seminars in Owen Sound on March 19/05.

Discussion on COVA presence at Fiesta Buckhorn booth followed.

Secretary to contact Fiesta Buckhorn for booth.

Discussion on booths at other events followed. 

Larry talked about a tasting for Wine writers of fruit and
 other wines from COVA prescribed areas with data and 
comments about each wine for use by the Wine Writers Association.

Proposal by Larry Paterson to pull together a number of the
 best wines COVA is producing for a wine tasting for the wine
 writers of Canada and to spend up to $100.

Carl proposes to pull together COVA informational paper for 
distribution at various functions and spend up to $200. 
Motion carried by membership.

Bert Dunn talked about the insurance for COVA to cover any
 problems that may arise.

A committee is struck to look into insurance for COVA.
 Bryan Pell, Bert Dunn, Liang Liu and Carl Kimmett 
volunteered to be on this committee.

Discussion regarding posting a map on the web site with 
links to specific businesses that are part of COVA followed.
 Wally Henry came forward to help Larry set up this web map.

Church Key Brewery and Holiday Inn will put on a set of 
dinners with locally grown foods, wines and beers.

Larry Paterson is looking at forming international cold
 climate growers association. A meeting will be held on
 Oct 24 in Quebec. Positions are available, see Larry if
 interested.

Larry is also looking at connecting with a Polish list server.

 Since the Federal Government does testing in British Columbia,
 Larry moves that the COVA president write a letter to ask that
 the testing be done in Freligsburg, Quebec, so we in this area
 can obtain new varieties of vines more quickly.  The President
 asks the Vice President and secretary to write a letter that
 he will sign. Approved by quorum.

Carl  Kimmett thanked Bryan Pell for his year as president.

Brian Pell moves to adjourn Business Meeting that was seconded 
by Maureen Davidson

Meeting was adjourned.
