"DATE: 08-22-07 Appearance: Purple.
Nose: Elderberry right down to that rubbery shiraz-like note, with a hint of spicy oak.
Palate: Medium with moderate acidity, heavyweight. Big porty attack, less heavy than the real thing, but that is the level of alcohol. Palate nicely follows the nose, adding a leathery character and dusty tannins midpalate, ending a long clean finish with an attractive bitterness.
Conclusions: Capable of more than ten years in a good cellar, this would be a treat with the usual port suspects. Try it especially with blue cheese, old cheddar or fresh fruit. Will develop into something extra special in five years. Few people realize that about 275 years ago there was a horrible scandal in Portugal involving the improvement of real port with elderberries, which led to the first laws regulating the production of any wine region (and the removal of elderberry trees from certain parts of Portugal!). The similarity is more than accidental..." lfw
