After taking over the responsibilities as chief winemaker, the quality of Pillitteri wines improved substantially, although her predecessors' wines were already acclaimed and quite popular with locals and Torontonians.
Along with the quality, quantity grew, mainly due to her winemaking expertise and ability to produce palate-pleasing wines.
To date, her wines won more than 200 respected international and Canadian awards, which attest to her winemaking skills and devotion to the profession.
Considering the fact that before 1980's few wine enthusiasts believed Canada to have the terroir to produce fine wine, her achievements to date prove the degree of progress the industry made in general, and Sue-Ann in particular.
Her interest in viticulture began at an early age, influenced by a long family history of viticulture spanning five generations in the Niagara Peninsula. She was determined to pursue a career in oenology at an early age.
During her Honour's Horticulture and Biotechnology studies at the University of Guelph, she was the first Canadian to write an undergraduate paper that was awarded the "Top Undergraduate Research Paper" prize by the American Society for Horticultural Science.
Her winemaking style is well grounded in technique and in artistic expression of the terroir.
