With the very high percentage of vinifera ancestry (50% from the riesling parent and a fair additional fraction from the other parent) this is not a very hardy variety. We lost 80% of our vines in the severe winter of 1993 but believe we will do better in the future with our replanted vines if we ever have a Winter again.

Comments from Andrew Bennett (Nova Scotia, Canada)(edited by lfw): GM318-57 is our favorite grape. One parent is the noble German riesling and the fruit has more of the riesling character than any other hybrid we have encountered, including others of similar parentage such as the Geisenheim cross GM322-58. This grape is also grown in the Niagara region but the flavour is better in Nova Scotia in our somewhat cooler climate - we also have more difficulty getting it fully ripe and always struggle with excess acidity but that's part of the fun. Like riesling, it is a versatile grape and will also make sweet wines.
