Comments from lfw:
Landal Noir (244) is the parent of Landot 4511, and thus the grandparent of Frontenac and Frontenac Gris. I believe that Landot Noir by itself can make very good wine. The Wine Spectator has rated a wine made from Landot Noir at 96 points (from the Hudson River Valley), and the American Wine Society awarded a Gold medal in their commercial competition to another, from, I believe, New Hampshire. Landot blended with Landal makes a very interesting wine. Both age well for long periods, improving for more than 10 years if they were good to start with. Both seem to suffer from drought conditions, which seems to delay or hold back sugar development, or can kill the vines in the first season. While more disease resistant than vinifera, the vine is not as resistant as many of the Minnesota varieties. I see Landot as part of a big red blend, adding fruit, size and spice to the mix. And it is one of the few "unknowns" that the market place may buy as a varietal.
