Comments from the Minnesota Grape Growers Association.: Another relative newcomer from Elmer Swenson, Swenson White is, like Swenson White, a challenger to St. Pepin in terms of vineyard performance and wine quality. The clusters of Swenson White are medium-large (90-230 ave=152g) and rather loose. Berries are large(4g), yellowish, and thick-skinned, allowing them to hang on the vine, unmolested by insects, late into the fall season. This selection ripens rather late, struggling to make 20 Brix by the first of October in the St. Paul area. Acidity is moderate. White wines produced from Swenson White have been excellent, with a pronounced flowery nose remindful of St. Pepin and a long fruity finish. With its ability to hang on the vine and its good aromatics, this selection also should be a good candidate for eiswein. Very disease resistant. Appears to be a bit hardier than St. Pepin. Perfect flowers. A seedling of Edelweiss x E.S. 442. Needs to be more widely tested in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
