"DATE: 03-23-07 Appearance: Ruby (dark for gamay).
Nose: Cherry/beet/strawberry, more a pinot nose than a gamay nose.
Palate: Dry with good acidity, midweight. Big gamay with lots of flavour, adding spicy oak notes and dark berries to the mix promised on the nose. Rich midpalate, spicy as well, peppery, and lots of character. Long clean finish.
Conclusions: Gamay supposedly has no business tasting like "Real Wine" but this one resembles the very best Beaujolais in that it has taken on Pinot Noir character. While Gamay is normally something to drink within 3 years, this sweetheart could go to 2010 easily. Great character, and another reason that Ontario should focus more on this variety which is looked down upon in an age of hot sweet reds... Great utility at the table." lfw

FROM THE PRODUCERS:"One of Maleta's signature wines, the 2003 Gamay shows exuberant cherry fruit and refined structure. Typical of Gamay are the candied cherry notes, fresh cranberry and lively acidity. The oak has added a sweet touch of vanilla aromatics with hints of cedar and a beguiling spicy finish. Like the Maleta Gamays before it, this defies typicity with far more elegance than is normally expected from this grape type. However it never loses the desirable fruit forward character. Youthful astringency was apparent at bottling providing the backbone to maintain the wine over three to five years.

A medium-bodied wine to enjoy with turkey, rabbit, cold cuts and creamy cheeses.

Drink now-2010."
