Lardy's Wine Tasting Notes
Medium Fruit Wines

Medium fruit wines are an unusual category. When most people think of medium fruit wines they think of the many "strawberry zinfandels" or "blackberry cabernets" on the market. I find these near-wines too sweet, with candied (artificial-tasting) fruit, and too full of preservatives to include in this database. They are a parody of wine - a drink for those who don't like wine. I don't object to light blends of fruit and wine, but why not blend fruit juice with wine and make Sangria, which these are poor imitations of. Big price, big advertising, lotsa extra chemicals, Gotcha!

But there are medium-sweet fruit wines that are delightful. If well-balanced, the fruit, alcohol, acid, tannin and other flavour ingredients are in beautiful harmony. Above all, they are clean and pure expressions of fruit purity. They are not well known and not easy to find, but they are well worth hunting down.

I consider these wines to be consumed by themselves, or with a fruit and cheese tray on a summer day. They can be delightfully refreshing, and provide a welcome change of pace for the serious wine drinker. And they can work with food. The best one-word description of these wines is "Social", which reflects the way they taste and the way that you would use them...
