Growwiners on Prince Edward Island
ALAN MCLEOD
lives in New Glasgow, PEI. He has 60
plants from Euro Nursery in their first year and some older
vines he grew over the last couple of years to test the
winter kill. Vines include 1 Severnji, 3 Valiant and 10 each Baco Noir, Leon Millot, Gamay Noir, Marechal Foch, Auxerrois and GM-318. The Foch budded after 3 weeks and Alan has decided to let the grapes grow (survival of the fittest!). He is a veggie gardener as well with
1800 onions, 100 spud mounds, a variety of squashes, etc.
If this was not enough Alan has planted a pear and apple
orchard over the last three years that should provide
cider and perry by 2007. It is very early days for wine
on the Island, all in all, but he is
encouraged by the local interest from his neighbours. One
older farmer even said there used to be peaches in PEI
so Alan figures he'll have to get some of those too!
