GROWWINE POSTINGS BY FUME IN MAY 2000

It looks like we are going to have a frost tomorrow night around Ottawa. What could append to our vine that where planted in 1999. Is it really necessary to make little wood fires to protect them in their second year of growing?

Il semble que nous allons avoir de la gelée dans la région avoisinante d'Ottawa demain soir. Devons-nous protéger nos vignes plantées en 1999. Est-il nécesaire de faire de petits feus pour protéger ces petites vignes de deux ans?

Hi Serge!

I smoked the entire City of Aylmer. I had visitors all night. They where curious and wanted to know what the hell is going on. That was my first experience with fires. For winery advertizing it is a very good. They will all come buying wine. Dont forget if you are in a City to advise the Fire Department before. In The Ottawa area they are not too familiar with the vineyard operations.

This is my report!

Hi Guys!

If you take the Alfred Express to attend our 27 May meeting, ask anyone in Ottawa where is the smoke coming from. They all now. This is my place and vineyard...

Hope not too many frost because in my city it becomes an huge PR operation.

Aylmer/Ottawa Area. Wheather was +3C all night but at the soil level was -2 or -3 from midnight to 4 am. At 4 am temperature climbed at 2C (soil level). So the City of Aylmer residents had a smoky night. No complaints up to now... Fire Dept is very cooperative and very interested in my vineyard... my first bottles of wine are all promissed...

Larry!

I found out why the temperature climbed at 4am in Aylmer. The wind turned East and the heat from Downtown Ottawa came to my place. Is it not wonderful. With Chretien there, no wonder it was hot...

and, finally...

The smoke helped protecting also all my neighbour flowers in Aylmer. They love me. And also my vines are perfect. But what a mess and work doing all those fires. Some places are using good irrigation systems. I am making research on these systems. We will try to talk about frosts problems in Alfred on May 27 meeting.
