2 Code 2 shows minimal but recognizable damage. This damage is not sufficient to prevent a full normal crop. This recognizable damage is beyond and above the normal winter-killing of the ends of long canes. Some damage was noticed on buds intended for crop this year. In percentage terms, between 60 and 79% primary bud survival. The buds are growing most of the way out the canes, well above the snow line.
3 A code of 3 indicates that the grower experienced real damage, but 40 - 60% of the primary buds survived. There are some buds growing above the snow line, with some flowers showing, but many either are not growing, or were very late starting (probably secondary or tertiary buds)..
4 A code of 4 indicates that the grower found significant damage to the vines. Less than 40% of the expected crop was pushing buds out after the two weeks of good spring weather that should have started them. Between 15 and 40% primary bud survival. Most of the growth is regrowth from the bottom of the vine, with occasional buds breaking slowly at a higher level.
5 A survival code of 5 means that the growers noticed severe damage to the vine(s) under their control. Less than 15% of the primaries survived. In many cases, there will be poor growth, from the bottom of the vine only. These may or may not have flowers formed.

1 Code 1 indicates that there was no abnormal damage noticed. There is always some winterkill, usually those buds furthest from the trunk. This could be expressed as 80% primary bud survival or better. The buds have burst and are growing far out along the vine, nearly as far out as they can be.
