Growwiners in South Western Ontario
Erie Shore Vineyard opened a winery store at the vineyard location on December 1st, 2002, offering VQA wines. This opening marked the 7th winery to open in recent times in Essex County. To date it remains the newest winery to open, although up to six more wineries are scheduled to open in 2005-2006 in the area. Erie Shore Vineyard is located 3.3 km (2 miles) west of the village of Colchester on Lake Erie and specializes in 100% estate grown VQA wines.
Erie Shore Vineyard wines have received numerous favorable reviews by critics, including 2001 VQA Summer Sun in Billy’s Best Bottles, Fall 2003, 2000 VQA Cabernet Franc in LCBO Food & Drink, Fall 2003 by Natalie MacLean, 2002 VQA Riesling, by the International Press Club, June 2004, to name a few. Our 2002 VQA Baco Noir was recently awarded Silver at the 2004 All-Canadian Wine Awards.
Erie Shore Vineyard wines are only available at the wine store located at the vineyard.

DON PANAGAPKA is one of the best winemakers in Ontario (his amateur status does not limit this statement). A fierce competitor, Don has written an interesting article showing persistence and self-education entitled "Diary of a Winemaker" which I have included as his bio. The above was written by some little fat wino...

MICHAEL DUNN
of Clos Michel-George (Waterloo), the world's smallest
appellation (Haha). Well, at least there's a fence! The fence (combined
with an elevation drop) shelters the vines and creates a warmer
nanoclimate. I love variety: this tiny vineyard is tightly packed with 75
vines (about 25 varieties include Chard, P.Noir, Baco, Traminette, Ries,
Vidal, DeChaunac, Madeleines, Ortega, Himrod, Siegerrebe,
Muller-Thurgau, Bacchus, Optima, Auxerrois,
and a lone (just for fun) Syrah! Many are own-rooted. The soil is very
dense clay and some vines are having trouble getting established. A
net will have to go up if 2000 is to become my first vintage
year! Email Michael Dunn (Ask about the LCBO listserver)
