I want to tell you that this forum is entertaining and educational for me. There's alot of good humour out there. Could it be the effect of all that good wine? I'm learning alot and getting ready for year 3 with 6 Baltica vines. I am making wines from rosehips, raspberries and dandelions -not all together- at this time. Please don't kick me off the list - but I make my grape wine from a kit.

Hugh Johnstone
One story or any other will do
Ontario Canada hjohnstone AT i-zoom.net
Hugh is retired from the LCBO where he served many years as the head of the province’s wine consultants. I believe he first served Al Capone on a cross-border trip. (NO HE’S NOT THAT HUGH JOHNSON- the “real” one has better facial hair.) Now that he is in the real world, he has planted 33 vines in very rocky soil in Fenelon Falls. His Baco, Seyval and Chardonnay are unlikely to rival the taxpayer-funded libations he is used to, but the old goat is occasionally surprising. Time will tell - but Hugh won’t. Hugh was also a founding partner in Wally’s Folly in Buckhorn. It’s kind of nice to see the beaurocrat out doing real work in the vineyard...now if he could only catch fish to go with his whine! Arcadie House Vineyards, Bear River East, Nova Scotia.
We have been members of the Nova Scotia Grape Growers Association since
2004 and are on our second vineyard. Our first vineyard was a 3 acre
planting at our Bed & Breakfast in Weymouth, Nova Scotia and consisted
of mainly Pinot Noir, New York Muscat and Foch. We really caught the
grape bug with that vineyard, decided that we'd like to have a larger
planting and found a beautiful site in Bear River East. In the Spring
of 2006 we began planting out what would become a 9.5 acre vineyard.
Blessed with a southern exposure, good air drainage and a gentle slope
we went full steam ahead and planted Pinot Gris, Marchal Joffre, GM 318
(Reisling), Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, New York Muscat and 300
test vines including Seyval Blanc, Auxerrois and Baco Noir. The Pinot
Gris produced a very small crop this year and Brix of 21.

Larry Paterson

Ontario Canada littlefatwino AT trytel.net
Larry Peterson was discovered in a cradle, crafted from reeds, afloat in Cranberry Bay (or so his father says). At our first meeting Larry was kind enough to explain that wine should be tasted and never swallowed. I conveyed my feelings in this regard and consequently hold the distinction of being the only person to have changed Larry's mind about anything. Larry's successes are many; husband, father, accountant, vineyard founder, Champion of Ontario's Wine Growers, progenitor of Growwine, nourisher of insects and rodents, and Candidate for the Order of Canada. To the surprise of no-one, investigation by the Government of Canada showed that Barbara, Larry's wife, was more deserving of the award. However, Officialdom, feeling that some form of recognition was indeed in order, adopted the suggestion of their French counterpart, and are currently renaming a variety of wild yeast (Saccharomyces pestilens) in Larry's Honor. Congratulations my Friend! (Written by Hugh Johnstone)
