The 2006 Gala raised more than $ 20,000 for the kids!!

Wines available for the 2007 Auction:     Wines   Books   Pick of the Pinots Tasting!

On April 28th the Kawartha-Haliburton Children's Foundation will host their annual fundraising event to raise money for the children who are in need of protection and who are involved with the Kawartha-Haliburton Children's Aid Society.

All funds raised at this event will go towards sending children of abuse to camp this summer. Camp is a very positive experience for these children, as they get to experience nature, meet new friends, paddle a canoe, sing songs by the campfire and learn how to feel good about themselves.

You can help these children by donating a bottle of fine wine for our 2007 auction, by making a cash donation or by attending the function. The wines at the pre-gala tasting will come from: Colio Estate Winery     Joseph's Estate Wines     Kawartha Country Wines     Konzelmann Estate Winery     Ocala Winery    Pelee Island Winery  and Reif Estate Winery. Thanks to all the wineries!

The potential value of wine donations will be determined by our local wine appraisal panel based on market information, personal knowledge and expert research. Wines donated to and received by the KHCF by December 31, 2006 for the 2007 auction will have tax receipts for the 2006 Taxation Year issued in early 2007.

Opimian Society Lamont Cabernet Sauvignon California
USA
$50.00   an anonymous donor 1979 was rated as 8/10 as a vintage by LCBO Vintages, with the recommendation to drink the wines now. Cabernet Sauvignon from good years can age a very long time. These wines may be quite surprising, and, depending on how well the original corks have lasted, may also be just past their prime. But how often can you and a couple of friends sit down to almost-30 year old wine?

Italy
$125.00   Mary Lynn Anderson This is a top wine from a top Tuscan producer. Brunello di Montalcino wines are made from a specific clone of Sangiovese that has taken to producing some of the best red wines in the world. Never inexpensive, these ageworthy wines are among the very best of Italy.

This wine should be in prime time right now. 1982 was a superb vintage.

Inniskillin Riesling Botrytis Affected Niagara
Canada
$125.00   Rod Davidson Most certainly one of the most interesting dessert wines ever made in Ontario, this is likely still in excellent shape. Wines made from grapes that are as heavily affected by botrytis as this one was seem to live almost indefinitely, with the cork being the most serious concern to ageability!

French Sauternes are generally heavily botrytis affected, as are German Trockenbeerenauslesen. This is more like a tba than a sauterne, but has that ageability. This is a wine that I have enjoyed every time I have tasted it (Larry Paterson, lfw).

1988 Stoney Ridge Cellars Lenko Vineyard Chardonnay Niagara

1988 Tedeschi Recioto Della Valpolicella Veneto
Italy
$95.00   an anonymous donor "Recioto, distinctive category of north east Italian Dried Grape Wines, a historic speciality of Veneto. The word derives from the Italian for ear, orecchio, because the wine was originally produced only from the ripest grapes in the bunch, from the upper lobes, or ears, although selected whole bunches have long been substituted. The most common forms of Recioto are sweet red Recioto della Valpolicella"...snip... From the Oxford Companion to Wine by Jancis Robinson.
1989 Chateau Clerc-Milon
BORDEAUX 5th Growth 1855
Bordeaux
France
$200.00   Martin Pick Scored 96 by Wine Spectator, 90 by Robert Parker and 5.5 by 1855.com, Look at thewinedoctor.com. Also Wine Spectator had this to say (by James Suckling May 1999) - "Big, young, chewy wine, good dark ruby colour. Black cherry, green tobacco & mint aromas, full bodied and tannic, yet there's lovely mint & cherry character. Still tight and closed. Needs time to show what it's got. Best after 2002".
1989 Henry of Pelham Baco Noir Niagara
Canada
$100.00   an anonymous donor This is the famous second vintage of Henry of Pelham Baco Noir, the second of four great wines (1988 to 1991). Still quite lively, now fully mature, presuming the bottles to be in good condition. It is amazing how well Baco and Foch and other top-notch red hybrid wines age! Fully mature - now what does that mean? Largely, it's the same question as how old do you like your cheese..

Capitel de Roari Amarone Veneto
Italy
$125.00   an anonymous donor "This is Righetti’s reserve Amarone. The name "Capitel de’Roari" is derived from the local way to say "many oaks" and refers to the various plots of vineyards where grapes are obtained for the famous "Capitel de’Roari" Amarone Classico. The vineyards, which are situated on the finest hills of the Valpolicella Classico, are well cultivated, limited in production and high in quality. The land, rich in clay and sun, is a key element that encourages concentration of sugar and flavour." From smallwinemakers.ca

Chateau De Ricaud Loupiac Loupiac
France
$65.00   Rod Davidson Loupiac overlooks the right bank of the Garonne, and like its left bank cousin, Sauternes, produces sweet white wine that depends dramatically upon Botrytis (noble rot) to lift her wines to greatness. 1990 produced vineyard enveloping Botrytis, giving Chateau De Ricaud, one of Parker's "Best Value Wineries" everything needed to produce fine dessert wine. (Hugh Johnstone)

2 Bottles
Henry of Pelham Baco Noir Niagara
Canada
$100.00   an anonymous donor This is the third of the four great vintages of Henry of Pelham Baco Noir (1988 to 1991). When last tasted (WINTER 2006) it was approaching full maturity, but with life remaining. Of the four vintages mentioned, I suspect the 1990 is the furthest advanced.

Baco Noir has become a cult wine in Ontario, and this is a great example of the combination of a good year, ripe grapes and good winemaking can produce.

In present terms, due to its cult status, a Baco of this complexity would be termed Reserve and priced at or above $25. They do exist, from Pelham, Lakeview, Sanson, Thomas & Vaughn and others. The current vintages are made with an earlier consumption in mind, and may not age as well as this one.

1990 Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino Tuscany
Italy
$155.00   Rod Davidson See this interesting article about 1990 Brunello's (Ignore the prices listed as this article is from 1996!) Brunello is a clonal selection of Sangiovese chosen because the vines produce concentrated, tannic, spicy and ultimately heady wines. 1990 is a great, great Tuscan vintage, and Geografico is one of Parker's good producers. (Hugh Johnstone)
1990
2 Bottles
Reif Gewurztraminer Medium Niagara
Canada
$20.00   an anonymous donor Classical wisdom says that Gewurztraminer wines - even in a good cellar - cannot last for more than about ten years at most. This wine is more than 16 years old. It may well be past it, but one cannot ever tell. I have had properly cellared Ontario Gewurz that was still quite enjoyable at 13 years of age.

These bottles have been properly cellared in ideal conditions, and I know that they have properly cared for. They may well taste great - but probably only for half an hour before they deteriorate. This is quite common with old wines, and they can be the most interesting of all - open this with three or four wine-lover friends!

Reif Vidal Icewine Niagara
Canada
$180.00   Larry Paterson
Little Fat Wino
A monster icewine from the hottest year in modern Niagara viticulture. Wonderfully ripe grapes were fully frozen, yielding high-brix even by icewine standards. The wine took a relatively long time to ferment, and the slower fermentation left more delicate flavours as well as great concentration.

Although this is in its 17th year, the wine is still in great shape and capable of further ageing. Wonderful wine from a great icewine producer in a great year.

1991 Righetti Valpolicella Campolieti Veneto
Italy
$65.00   an anonymous donor "Campolieti means "happy fields" and refers to the vineyards from which the grapes are harvested. The wine is a traditional blend of the corvina, rondinella and molinara grape varietals that have had a second fermentation on the pressings of the Amarone grapes (a process called "ripasso"). This process gives the Valpolicella additional flavour and structure. After the second fermentation the Campolieti is aged for one year, partly in French barriques and partly in 20hl oak barrels.". From Smugglers Run Wine list.

Stoney Ridge Cellars Late Harvest Semillon Niagara
Canada
Sonoma
USA
$100.00   Rod Davidson Another botrytis affected wine with good ageability, probably at its best now. This is an unusual blend of more than 50% California Botrytis-affected Semillon with very ripe Niagara Gewurztraminer. Great dessert wine from the hands of Jim Warren.
1991 Stoney Ridge Cellars Puddicombe Vineyard Estate Chardonnay Niagara
Canada
$125.00   Jim Warren 1991 was the warmest year for grapegrowing in Niagara in modern times, and produced rich, ripe wines with ageability. The Puddicombe Farm was the location of Stoney Ridge Winery at this point in time (until after the mid-90's).
1992 Chateau des Charmes Late Harvest Riesling Niagara
Canada
$75.00   Rod Davidson This 750 ml bottle (they usually bottle this in a 375 ml) from a cooler year has produced a wine that is more Auslesen in substance than the more normal beerenauslesen Late Harvest Riesling. Elegant and fully mature, this wine could hold longer in a good cellar. Sure to have developed the riesling petrol character, to go along with rich deep flavours. This wine would (we guess) be about 6% sugar. Treat like a very good German wine. Chateau des Charmes Rieslings, year after year, are their best values.
1992 Stoney Ridge Cellars Butler's Grant Vineyard Chardonnay Niagara
Canada
$150.00   Jim Warren This chardonnay is proof that in the poorest of years, proper vineyard management plus great winemaking can produce long-lived elegant wines. My memory says this was the best white wine of the vintage, big yet elegant.
1993 Eileen Hardy Shiraz Australia $325.00   an anonymous donor "As a tribute to the matriarch of Australia's best known winemaking and sailing family, the first Eileen Hardy Shiraz was released in 1973. Eileen actively influenced the Hardy company between 1938 - 1975. In recognition of this great lady, the finest parcels of Shiraz and Chardonnay from each vintage are selected to bear the prestigious Eileen Hardy label. Numerous trophies and awards support our winemakers' choice." from the Hardy's website.

This is a high-value top end Australian wine, capable of long ageing, and should appreciate in value over time. The 1993 should be ready to consume enjoyably, or could keep for a long time.

1993 Stoney Ridge Cellars Butler's Grant Vineyard Chardonnay Niagara
Canada
$150.00   Jim Warren 1993 was a good vintage with a small crop (which was then followed by a horrid winter which had no effect on 1993 wines!). The small crop - due to spring frosts - produced intense long-living wines. This Chardonnay has developed into a mature rich complex wine (last tasted in 2003) that is probably at its best, but may hold another year or three. Top quality elegant chardonnay.
1994 Lakeview Cellars Reserve Gamay Niagara
Canada
$40.00   an anonymous donor 1994 was a leaner year, best known for great riesling, but it is often in so-called "Riesling" years that Gamay produces Pinot Noir-ish wines that can age well. This is because the fruit is often left to hang longer and achieves a better acid/alcohol/extract balance.

This oaked version had great concentration and intense fruit, and may well be in good shape still. It may also be one of those older wines best consumed quickly after opening.

1994 Leasingham Clare Valley Shiraz Australia $75.00   an anonymous donor some information from the area association.
1994 Stoney Ridge Cellars Lenko Vineyard Chardonnay Niagara
Canada
$75.00   Jim Warren 1994 was a lower-crop year with cool growing conditions which produced wines in Niagara known more for elegance and ageworthiness than for bigness. This wine is maturing and is ready to consume within two years.
1994 Stoney Ridge Cellars Tenth Anniversay Estate Chardonnay Niagara
Canada

1995 Cave Spring Cabernet Merlot Niagara
Canada
$100.00   Larry Paterson
Little Fat Wino
From one of the best vintages that Niagara has experienced, this fully mature Bordeaux blend is midweight and elegant rather than the more modern heavy and tannic.

Normally known as Riesling and Chardonnay producers, Cave Spring has made quite creditable Bordeaux/Meritage style wines in the best years.

1995 Faiveley Mercurey Les Mauvarennes Burgundy
France
$50.00   Dr. John Martyn some information about Mercurey.
1995 Inniskillin Reserve Merlot / Cabernet Franc Niagara
Canada
$180.00   Larry Paterson
Little Fat Wino
One of the two great reds made by Inniskillin in this great Ontario vintage (the Klose Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon being the other). This elegant wine is maturing nicely, yet still has some time in front of it. This was very well received in the 2006 KHCF auction, sparking quite the bidding war!

1995 Stoney Ridge Cellars Reserve Cabernet Niagara
Canada
$175.00   Larry Paterson
Little Fat Wino
A great wine from a great producer in a great vintage. Originally a steal at $20, this wine (and their equally good Cab Franc Merlot) have knocked out top Bordeaux in blind tastings with experts - winner of this tasting   see also this tasting or this one. where another 1995 Stoney Ridge red tied for 5th out of 30 with a $349 First Growth Bordeaux.

Both wines are still in excellent shape, with the Cab Sauv having perhaps another five years in front of it for those tasters who have acquired the taste for mature reds.

1995 Stoney Ridge Cellars Lenko Vineyard Chardonnay Niagara
Canada
$100.00   Jim Warren 1995 was one of the five great vintages that Ontario has experienced in modern winemaking times (91, 98, 99 and 2002 are the others). Grapes ripened fully this year, with rich ripe tropical flavours - a big year rather than an elegant one. This wine is high-level Californian in feel.
1996 d'Arenberg The Custodian Grenache McLaren Vale
Australia
70.00   Rod Davidson Grenache allows all things to the producer. He can make large quantity, or great quality. d'Arenberg long ago adopted the latter approach, and the role of "Custodian" for the reputation of Australian Grenache to produce fine, age-worthy wines. (Hugh Johnstone)

1997 Henry of Pelham Cabernet Merlot Niagara
Canada
$75.00   Larry Paterson
Little Fat Wino
Very much a left-bank Bordeaux style in a leaner year, this is an example of good wine-growing teamed with good wine-making to produce an excellent wine. Ron Giesenbrecht has done a very good job with this wine. Compares well with Bordeaux in its price range.
1997 Stoney Ridge Cellars Reserve Merlot Niagara
Canada
$150.00   Larry Paterson
Little Fat Wino
Stoney Ridge has a long track record of winning multiple awards with their Reserve Merlot wines. 1997 was a cooler vintage, but careful growing and winemaking have turned this into a very good wine. It should be consumed before 2010.

Reserve Ontario Merlot wines bear little resemblance to the mass-market flood of cheap and cheerful brands from all over the place. They have the structure and essence to last and improve - one of the hallmarks of a great red wine.

Look for the Reserve Meritage 2002 from this winery...

1997 Thirty Bench Reserve Blend Niagara
Canada
$125.00   Larry Paterson
Little Fat Wino
1997 was a lighter year, but growers such as Thirty Bench who thinned the crop to low levels ended up with high quality wines. Low yield gave them super-ripe grapes even in this lesser year, and a very long period fermenting on the skins extracted maximum flavours.

We have had great success over time using Thirty Bench wines in our Canada vs. Bordeaux tasting series.

This wine, though maturing now, still has up to five years in front of it if you have developed the taste for mature Bordeaux/Meritage reds, and is certainly a wine suitable to a black-tie dinner.

1998 Konzelmann Estate Winery Reserve Cabernet Merlot Niagara
Canada
$150.00   an anonymous donor 1998 was a superb year in Niagara, and Konzelmann's location on the lakeshore combined with the heat of the vintage allowed fully ripe grapes with good acidity, two prerequisites for outstanding ageworthy reds.

This wine recently performed very well at an experts-only tasting of Ontario versus top Bordeaux, finishing less than one-tenth of one percent behind a $349 bottle of 2001 Chateau Lafite Rothschild. An outstanding wine that still has three or four years in front of it.

1998 Lakeview Cellars Merlot Niagara
Canada
$85.00   Larry Paterson
Little Fat Wino
1998 was a superb vintage for this variety and in this part of Niagara. Rainfall patterns were good (no real drought but great heat accumulation) so that the amount of stress on the Merlot vines was minimized, making the best Merlots in Niagara this year into superb wines.

Winemaker Eddy Gurinskas was on top of his form in this vintage, and this wine still has some years in front of it.

1999 Daniel Lenko Winery Warren Signature Cabernet Sauvignon Niagara
Canada
$150.00   Larry Paterson
Little Fat Wino
Made by Jim Warren, with low-yield fruit and in a great vintage. Jim was particularly motivated to make the best wines of his career after leaving Stoney Ridge, and this, along with the Merlot, was one of the best wines made in Canada in this great vintage.

1999 Henry of Pelham Cabernet Merlot Niagara

This is a great wine from a great vintage and a great winemaker. We have had this wine knock out pricy Bordeaux in blind tastings see this page. In good years Ontario Bordeaux/Meritage wines are hard to tell from top-quality Bordeaux.

2001 Reif Estate Winery First Growth Cabernet Niagara
Canada
$125.00   an anonymous donor Reif has taken red wines very seriously since 1995 (with some good reds from '91 as well) and their First Growth Series is their top production. The standards for making their first growth line is posted on their website.

This wine recently performed very well at an experts-only tasting of Ontario versus top Bordeaux, finishing 0.31% ahead of a $349 bottle of 2001 Chateau Lafite Rothschild and falling 0.23% short of the $339 Chateau Margaux. It has many years ageing potential in a good cellar, the equally good 1995 (Called "Tesoro") is just starting to reach maturity now...

Chapelle Ste Agnes Gewurztraminer Geisenheim Icewine Quebec

$150.00   John Antony This Quebec-grown icewine is from the wonderful Chapelle Ste-Agnes Vineyard near Sutton (near the Vermont border). It won the title of best Gewurztraminer icewine in the world at the International Wine & Spirits competition in London England last year. An enormous prize for a wonderful little bottle of wine. The winery itself is an escape from the 21st century, eye-candy for the wine-lover and lover of antiques.

2002 Niagara College Teaching Winery Barrel Fermented & Aged Chardonnay Niagara
Canada
$80.00   Jim Warren By 2002 Jim Warren was consulting to a number of wineries, but his great love was teaching the kids winemaking at the College. This effectively gave Jim the chance to revert to his amateur winemaking roots, and allowed him the chance to make small experimental batches of the best wines he could craft, which were then sold through the college.

The 2002 is still quite youthful, with many years in front of it, and would be best with a flavourful roasted bird at this point (if you must!).

2003 Niagara College Teaching Winery Barrel Fermented & Aged Chardonnay Niagara
Canada
$80.00   Jim Warren The 2003 vintage was small but of quite high quality, and Jim Warren is a winemaker who knows how to get the most out of the least. This wine is just starting to develop rich buttery tropical flavours, and has a long life in front of it, properly cellared. An ageworthy white that has not yet really started to show its paces.
2003 Niagara College Teaching Winery Warren Classic Chardonnay Niagara
Canada
$100.00   Jim Warren The top production of the College Winery is the Warren Classic series, the best barrels only of the best wines. These wines are of very high quality, and ageworthy. The 2003 Classic will not really develop until 2010, but is already delightful in youth. Great future star.

$110.00   Raul-Inder Soligo This package of five wines from the modern Cantina Colli Del Soligo contains two bottles of 2003 Pinot Nero (aka Pinot Noir), one bottle of 2004 Pinot Grigio, one bottle of 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon and one bottle of non-vintage Prosecco (sparkling).

This winery is maybe best known for innovative sales of Prosecco sparkling (in golden cans yet!) in Europe.

2005 Niagara College Teaching Winery Barrel Fermented & Aged Chardonnay Niagara
Canada
$18.95   Jim Warren This wine is currently available at the College, and is another in a series of good rich oaky chards with ageability. The NCT wines are winning awards at many competitions, and the Chards tend to lead the way. Generally very good value in small-production wines.
nv Foss Marai Prosecco Italy $18.15   Bronson Smith "A well made Prosecco with fruit depth and lively acidity that would work nicely as an aperitif. Fresh and enticing nose of lemon, grapefruit and a touch of spice. Sufficient fruit concentration for the money. Crisp, clean and dry with good balance and length. Score - 87" (Jeff Davis, Wine Access, ?First In Line E-Report?, May 13, 2006). Note that the LCBO describes this as a still white wine, although it is a sparkling wine.
